Swiss Medical Health Insurance
Basics — By MattFounded in 1994, Swiss Medical is one of the largest and most important health insurance providers in Argentina. They offer a variety of different plans you can choose from, that can cover pretty much any extent of medical care you may need while living in Buenos Aires.
Without getting into too much detail, a typical plan with Swiss Medical includes:
- Free doctor visits in every specialty
- Free medical tests
- Free hospitalization
- Free emergency coverage
- Free dental coverage
- 40% discount for medications purchased in pharmacies
- Free medication during hospitalization
- Psychiatric visits at doctor’s office
- National and international travel coverage including legal assistance
Insurance for a young adult, including full international coverage, range from $260 – $910 pesos, depending on the type of coverage you require. If you do not plan on travelling, you can get plans that do not include international coverage, and are cheaper.
Swiss Medical prides themselves on using their high end technology to ensure the correct diagnosis is made every time. This becomes obvious when a trip to the doctor often leads to a quick x-ray or even an MRI or ultra sound. X-rays are done on the spot in the medical centers, and other types of diagnosis are often scheduled within a few days. Even surgeries are done with very short wait times.
One of the biggest advantages to having SM Health Insurance, is that you have access to their medical centers. These centers are similar to hospitals, and have some of the best technology in the country. Working in these facilities are some of Argentina´s best doctors, and the service provided is outstanding. As soon as you walk into one of these facilities, you get the feeling you are in good hands. Most plans also include access to various other medical centers, such as Hospital Italiano, Hospital Britanico, and Hospital Alemán.
If you do not want to go to a medical center, you can make an appointment with one of the many doctors listed in the company´s cartilla, which is a list of doctors that offer care covered under your Swiss Medical plan. If you are unable to leave your house, you can order a doctor to your house.
Some Swiss Medical plans also allow you to go to doctors that are not covered by your SM insurance, and the company will reimburse you up to a certain amount.
Are you concerned about your Spanish? The Swiss Medical centers always have English doctors on site, and if they are busy, translators are available.

I have been in contact with her to get more information about Swiss Medical, and she is extremely helpful. Her English is perfect and she would be happy to give you more information about the different health plans available. She does not charge any consultation fee, and you will be charged exactly the same amount as any Argentine.
Note:
I personally use Swiss Medical (have used OSDE in the past) and am extremely happy with the service. My coverage is amazing. I get pretty much any type of care I need, without having to pay a cent. Since I started with Swiss medical, I have gotten glasses, been to the dentist, been to a physiotherapist, a massage therapist, all without having to pay anything. It is nice to know that whatever care I need will be taken care of. In many ways, the care is superior to what I receive at home, because the doctors here do not hesitate to send you for tests to ensure a proper diagnosis. X-rays are done within about 10 min, and other medical tests you can usually get within the same week. Examinations are always thorough, I don’t leave thinking they may have missed something.
