Creamfields is the largest electronic music festival in South America, and Creamfields Buenos Aires is the best of the bunch. This is a massive single day event, where over 100 of the world´s top DJs will play to 60,000 screaming Argentines and tourists. The event currently takes place at the Autodromo, where the festival sets up a variety of tents. One of the main tents can hold over 10,000 people, and the smaller ones less than a thousand. There are also two open air venues, for the largest shows of the night, and this is where you´ll some amazing audio and visual shows by groups such as Prodigy, UNKLE, and Chemical Bros.

Most music festivals in South America will have a couple huge international headliners. Creamfields has over a dozen, giving you with the chance to see loads of the world´s most talented DJs.

The most difficult part about Creamfields is trying to decide which show to watch, because you are bound to have some of your favorite DJs playing at the same time. Some of the DJs that have played in the past include: Chemical Brothers, Carl Cox, John Digweed, Dubfire (Deep Dish), Hernán Cattaneo, Lcd Soundsystem, Erick Morillo, Paul Oakenfold, Underworld, Sasha, Kleinenberg, Tiga, and loads of others. This festival is a dream come true for any electronic music lover.

**If you don´t like massive events, you may not enjoy Creamfields. The venue is packed full of people, so expect to pinball your way from from one tent to another. It is also nearly impossible to find a taxi home if you leave at the end, and the Autodromo is right at the edge of the capital**

When: November
Where: Autodromo de Buenos Aires
Why: If you like big events, this is one of the best you´ll experience in Buenos Aires. If you are into electronic music, you know this is the ultimate experience in South America.

By far the best thing to do on a Monday night in Buenos Aires, La Bomba del Tiempo is a ridiculously popular percussion night at Ciudad Cultural Konex, which is an old oil factory. It makes for a perfect venue, especially during the warmer months when the concert is done outside. La Bomba starts at 8PM finishes at 10PM, but make sure to get there early unless you´ve already got tickets – line-ups go all the way around the block.

The shows is comprised of a group of 17 musicians that play different percussion instruments. It is all based on improvisation through dozens of different hand signals. For the first hour, it is only percussion, but the second hour includes an invited guest, which is different every week. It could be a guitar player, a singer, a trumpet player, a DJ, anyone that they feel will complement their music. This is one of the great things about La Bomba del Tiempo; although it is always similar, it does change from week to week.

The crowd is a great mix, comprised of tourists and Argentines. It is definitely a younger, hippie crowd, especially the ones that really get into it, and let loose with some crazy dancing. However, all kinds of people can be found, and very few people do not enjoy the experience. It is truly a great vibe as everyone gets into the music and dances to the hypnotic rhythms while enjoying the relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

Cost is $20 per person. Inside they sell 1L cups of beer for $20, as well as other drinks (including huge fernet and cokes) and empanadas if you are hungry. Ciudad Cultural Konex is located at Sarmiento 3131 in Abasto, right near Abasto Shopping. This is an event not to be missed, and don’t be surprised if you find yourself turning into a regular. It happens every Monday night all year long, rain or shine.

Here is a great video that will give you an idea what it’s like:

This is another huge wine event, and a perfect opportunity for you to try over 1000 Argentine wines from both large and boutique Argentine wineries. It is the largest and the most important wine event in Latina America, and provides wineries, wine lovers, buyers and sellers, all a chance to get together and learn about the new wines of the year.

Here’s how it works: You are given a wine glass at the entrance, and then are free to roam around and try all of the wines you like. If you plan on trying a few hundred, remember to spit, or you won’t make it all night!

A recent addition to this expo is a special section for Gourmet Wines. The tickets cost about twice that of your entrance to the expo, but you get to try a variety of wines that cost over $60 pesos retail. A nice option for the true wine aficionados.

In addition the general tasting, there are also various talks, cooking shows, courses, and blind tastings you can take part in. These are especially informative, and are highly recommended to those who are really into wine.

The perfect accompaniment to great wines are meats and cheeses, and these are also available for tastings. They make for a perfect opportunity to take a break from all the wine you are sure to have tried.

When: Beginning of September
Where: La Rural
Why: You love wine, and want an opportunity to try a whole ton of great Argentine wine.

Believe it or not, outside the bubble of this urban capital of Buenos Aires, exists approximately 3500 kilometers of land not covered in cafés, clubs, restaurants, Porteños, and clothing stores. “La Rural” is the annual agricultural event, which takes place at the event center La Rural Predio Ferial de Buenos Aires and attracts over a million people from all over Argentina. Farmers and agricultural lovers from outside these screaming streets slowly glide in throughout this event drinking mate, eating the various cheeses and meats that are being sold from nearby stands while casually chatting about their recent accomplishments or mishaps on the farm this past year. Continue to the large indoor space of the event center and you will see an assortment of cows, yes…. an assortment of cows. Farmers gather at “La Rural” once a year to proudly display their finest cattle. Venturing into the next indoor space, you will be surrounded by the high-pitched calls of roosters, chickens, peacocks, and a whole new list of Spanish vocabulary words that you may never use again. The city of Buenos Aires has it all…. even the country.

If you have even the slightest interest in tango, you should be attending this festival, the largest of its kind worldwide. Even if you don’t, you may want to consider that if you are in Buenos Aires, you are in the heart of the tango culture, and this is the best chance you’ll ever have to learn more about it.

The festival is essentially two events that happen at the same time. The first is a huge tango festival, which can be described as “everything relating to tango.” The highlight is all of the tango shows, ranging from traditional to electronic tango, and some of them by the best known tango groups in the world. You get to see loads of tango performances, and all of them for free!

Nonetheless, this festival is much more than just watching tango. If you are interested in learning more about tango, as well as how to dance, there are free seminars and dance classes. These classes are put on by some of the finest teachers in the city, and are available for both beginners and advanced.

Some other highlights of the event:

A Tango fair, which sells all sorts of products relating to tango – specifically clothes, music, and art.

A selection of cinema about tango

The presentation of books about tango

Clinics for tango musicians, or anyone interested in tango music

Conferences

To finish off the two weeks of tango is the World Tango Championships. The top tango dancers in the world compete to be named as the top dancers in the categories of Tango Salon and Tango Escenario. If you are not familiar with tango, you probably do not know the difference between the two, and for most people, Tango Escenario is by far the more appealing to watch. Here is a very basic definition:

Tango Salon: tango dancers dance in couples on stage, at the same time as various other couples.

Tango Escenario: each couple dances alone on stage to their chosen song, using their choreographed routine.

Although all performances and events are free, you still have to pick up tickets. Most of these have to be picked up within the first few days of the festival, and if you miss it, you won’t be able to get into most shows. For more information, visit the main site at http://www.mundialdetango.gob.ar/.

One of the top parties in the city, Zizek gave light to what is know globally known as Cumbia digital. It started as a small weekly clubnight, and in a short amount of time became one of the best week night events in Buenos Aires. That’s no small feat considering the plethora of party options available in Argentina´s capital. Nevertheless, the success of Zizek had only just begun. The weekly parties led to CD releases, tours around the country, and finally, tours around the world, including a performance at one of the globe’s biggest festivals – Roskilde.

Buenos Aires is where cumbia digital started, and if you are in BA now, don’t miss a chance to see it where it all began. ZIzek nights feature electronic music that can best be described as a mash up of cumbia with reggaeton, dancehall, hip-hop and any possible variation you can think of. Think lots of hip-hop/reggaton samples, with that signature rolling cumbia rythm. Nevertheless, as Cumbia Digital becomes more popular, more and more DJs are popping up around the world, which is leading to the mixing of new and different sounds and the evolution of a genre. Zizek continues to push the boundaries of the music they started, and the style is now more of a mashup of traditional/indigenous music and rythms with electronic overlays and hip hop samples.

Ciudad Emergente is a festival dedicated to showcasing a variety of “emerging” art forms in Argentina . It basically four days straight of performances, displays and exhibits of up-and-coming artists in rock, pop, fashion, film, street art, hip hop, animation, poetry, y digital art. Here is what you can expect to see in each:

Rock – some of the better (mainly) Argentine rock bands that are just breaking into the scene. There are performances of all different styles of rock, including some music that is more pop and folk than rock.

Film – new and old “rockumentaries” and other documentaries about music.

Street Art – Some of Argentina’s best graffiti artists will be on display.

Fashion – fashion shows by talented young designers

Hip hop – some of the cities best hip hop and break-dancers dancers, along with emerging hip hop DJs.

Digital Art and animation – a variety of digital art and animation displays.

If you are at all interested in what they call cultura joven (young culture) in Argentina, this is a great chance to see it all in one place. Without events such as Ciudad Emergente, this type of art and culture remains mostly underground and is only known about by those who are “part of the scene”. This event gives you a chance to be part of it.

Ciudad Emergente is a FREE event that takes place over five days at the Centro Cultural de Recoleta. For information and schedules, visit: http://www.ciudademergente.gob.ar

When: June
Where: Recoleta Cultural Center
Why: Your best chance to see all forms of Argentina’s rich, emerging cultural arts scene.

Pacha is one of the largest chains of nightclubs worldwide, known for their large, high end venues and talented DJs they attract. Pacha Buenos Aires fits this description perfectly, and is arguably the best spot in Buenos Aires for electronic music.

The club is located on the Costanera Norte, slightly north of the Jorge Newberry airport. It is a large, whitewashed building right by the water, with a great view of the rio de la plata. On hot summer nights you can almost feel as though you’ve gone to Ibiza.

Pacha is three stories high, the first one being the largest, and is the main room where the headliner will play. It has very high ceilings, lots of disco balls and lasers, and very good sound. The second floor acts as a mezzanine, and overlooks the main floor. It is more of a chill area, and has tables and a small bar. The third floor is a separate room altogether, and is often used as a VIP lounge. There is usually another DJ playing in this room, and outside of the room is a huge balcony with a great view of the river. In the summer, on the patio off of the main floor there will often be a DJ spinning outside as well.

Pacha truly is the prime spot to see the world’s best international Djs. Past shows include Dave Seaman, Christopher Lawrence, Nick Warren, John Acquaviva, John Creamer….the list goes on, and usually at least one month there is a performance by a very good international DJ. The best night to go is Saturday nights, which is the only night that is always electronic music. Fridays are usually some smaller party, often featuring some other type of music, and they only open the third floor. It’s a totally different club on these nights, and not recommended if you’re looking for electronic music.

There is no dress code at Pacha, although shorts are rarely allowed (unless you’re female) and no flip flops (again, females can probably get away with it). Dress is very informal, typically jeans and t-shirts, and lots of people wearing sunglasses. The crowd is mainly late teens to early twenties, and for the most part, there is a good vibe in the club.

Pacha is one of the more expensive discos, with cover costing $40 pesos +, and highballs $25 +

Bottom Line: One of the top places in BA to hear the world’s best electronic music. A very nice club, though gets a little overcrowded.
