Superclasico – Boca vs River

This weekend is the second Superclasico of the year, which is a football match between River and Boca.  If you weren´t already aware, these are the two top teams from Argentina, and any game between them is always called a Superclasico, because they have the biggest rivalry.

Most people in Argentina will watch this game, whether at home, at a bar, or by going to the stadium.  You can usually buy tickets from a tour company, but they are exorbitantly expensive – over 300 pesos per person.

Is it worth it?   Well, the superclasico was once name one of the year´s top 10 sporting events by Sports Illustrated.  You can expect a heated match with rabid fans singing chanting shouting yelling and swaying, so this is definitely a good chance to see the hinchas in action. However, this event is not what it used to be.  In the past, tickets were sold nearly 50/50 (50 percent to Boca fans, 50 percent to River fans), but for safety reasons, only 3000 tickets are now sold to the opposing team.  Although the rivalry is the same, the energy in the stadium is not what it once was.

Instead of breaking the bank, you may want to watch it in a bar.  This can be a lof of fun, as there is usually a mix of Boca and River fans, and winning this game is nearly a matter of life and death.  Fans get really into the game, and watching it in a bar can be almost as fun as being at the game itself.  Make sure to go early though, because it is almost impossible to find a seat in a bar after the game has started.
