Save Yourself from the Cold

Well, its going down to below 0 at night, and many of you don’t have heat.   So how do you deal with the cold?  Well, other than curling up with someone under the covers, most people result to drinking a lot of tea.

Have you ever tried Ginger Lemon tea?  Ginger is a truly magical root, and in addition to being one of my favorite flavors for cooking, also makes the perfect tea.   As long as you put in enough ginger, it has a nice spice to it, and will warm you right up.  It also helps improve your circulation, which in turn helps to keep you warmer as well.

Here’s how you make it:

For 4 cups of tea, use about 1 inch of fresh ginger root. Wash and peel the ginger, then finally grate it into a put.  Add about 2 cups of water, heat and bring to boil.  Once it is boiling, turn down the heat and let it simmer for 5 min.  Wash and cut your lemon into slices.   Squeeze the juice of one of the slices into one of the mugs, and then add it to the mug.  Repeat with the other mugs.  Pour the hot ginger water into the mugs, while straining.

And enjoy!   This is also the perfect tea to drink when you have a cold. It warms you right up, helps your sore throat, and you get VitC from the lemon.  Note:  it has to be fresh ginger, not powdered ginger.

Fresh ginger can be found in most fruterias for about $20-$25 pesos per kilo.   If you buy it at Disco or Jumbo, it can cost upwards of $40 pesos a kilo.

Other than lemon ginger tea, now is also the time to be eating carbonadas and locros.
