Mark´s Deli

Soup and Sandwich — By on July 9, 2010 at 1:32 pm

Mark´s Deli is a small sandwich and soup café located in the heart of Palermo Viejo.  It stands out for it´s big orange awning and the large crowds that it often has.  If you´re looking for a great homemade sandwich, salad or soup, this is one of the best spots to go in the area.

It was a cold, blustery day, which made me feel like a nice warm soup, so I ordered the soup of the day.  It was a spinach an mushroom soup, blended into a chunky puree.  It came with a few small pieces of toast.  The was very flavorful, you could really taste the mushrooms, and it had a very nice consistency.  It was simply delicious!  To drink, I had one of their famous lemonades.   The one I had was with mint, so it was lemon juice, mint, and ginger, blended together with very finely crushed ice.  It was amazing – very tart, you could mainly taste the lemon but hints of ginger and mint were certainly present.  This type of lemonade is fairly common in Buenos Aires, but this is the best one I´ve tried yet.

Although the food was excellent, the atmosphere is so-so, basically a large room with a bunch of wooden tables, and a nice patio outside.  It is also quite expensive – sandwiches are in the mid 20s, salads are in the low to mid-$30s, and my soup was $18 (and it was not a large bowl).  Nevertheless, it is hard to find a good soup and sandwich spot in Buenos Aires, and this certainly fits the bill.  If that´s what you´re craving, be sure to stop by Mark´s Deli when you get a chance.  Service was also good, very prompt and friendly.

Bottom Line: Great lunch spot with delicious food, but quite expensive.
