El Chalaco

Feature, Peruvian — By on March 1, 2010 at 9:34 pm

El Chalaco is a new Peruvian sandwich bar located on the corner of Fitz Roy and Paraguay. It’s basically a hole in the wall, with a bar, some stools and a couple of tables. They also offer delivery.

The menu is very limited, 8 hamburger-style sandwiches. They have a traditional hamburger, chicken burger, Turkey burger, roast beef burger, a tenderloin burger and a few others. Some of them have some unique toppings – for example, the tenderloin has onion, tomato, lettuce, soy sauce and ginger. They also use homemade mayos and sauces, giving their sandwiches some extra flavor. To accompany your sandwiches, you can order french fries, fried yucca and sweet potato fries.

To drink, El Chalaco offers numerous combinations of juices, using imported fruits that are typical in Peru, but difficult to find anywhere in Buenos Aires. For example, lucuma, cherimoya, passion fruit and papaya, in addition to more regular fruits such as bananas, oranges, and pineapple….and you are able to mix and match however you please. Keep in mind though, the rare fruits are imported frozen from Peru, and although they are 100% pure purées, they are not quite as good as fresh.

The sandwiches are really good….they are huge, about double the size of most burgers you get in Argentina. It tastes like really high quality fast food, and their homemade mayos are delicious!! They have avocado mayo, celery mayo, spicy mayo, regular mayo, and your usual, ketchup, mustards, and hot sauce. The various types of fries are delicious, especially the yucca, and you can mix and match the mayos to use as dips, which is highly recommended. It is also a treat to be able to order lucuma or cherimoya juices to accompany your food.

Although El Chalaco is no more than a hole in the wall, it has its own bit of charm. The three people running the joint were very friendly, and when we asked what their secret was for the delicious mayo, they created a new batch to show us step-by-step. The food is a little pricey ($20-$26 pesos per sandwich, which includes fries), but is much bigger and better than you will find in a similar style Argentine sandwich bar, and certainly better than McDonalds or Burger King. Not likely a place for weekly visits, but I´d definitely recommend it for something different every once in a while.

Bottom Line: A fun place to go if you want something simple yet different in Palermo Hollywood.
